Explore Mount Everest's Khumbu Glacier in HD

Crossing Mount Everest's Khumbu icefall is the first hazard mountaineers face when attempting to climb Mount Everest from the south side. The route from the south side is the most commonly climbed route. This spring David Breashears (best known for his IMAX film about Everest) captured a high definition gigapixel image of the Khumbu glacier. Glacier Works, which whose work I have featured in the past, has now published that image in a zoomable format. You can zoom in, zoom out, and pan around the image. See if you can count the basecamp tents in the picture.

Applications for Education
I'm adding this new Glacier Works image to my list of resources for teaching about Mount Everest. The image could be good for showing students how fractured the glacier becomes during the spring melt. It's also a good picture for showing people just how many tents and climbers are on Everest in the spring climbing season.
